Evidenced Resources for Osteoporosis

Enhanced consultation skills training

Introduction:

Osteoporosis Options eLearning contains modules designed to help clinicians further develop their clinical skills, particularly enhanced communication skills. The modules have been designed for health professionals caring for people with, or at risk of osteoporosis, with a particular focus on effective communication of the harms and benefits of medicines. However, the consultation skill modules are generic and as such will be relevant to any health professional consulting with patients.

The 7 modules include 5 developed during the iFraP research study: Using the Osteoporosis Options tool in Fracture Liaison Service consultations; Person centred care and shared decision making; Communicating about Osteoporosis;  Communicating risk; Addressing health literacy

There are 2 additional modules informed by other research studies:

Understanding and explaining Bone Density (DXA) Scans, informed by the INDEX (Improving uNderstanding of DEXa scans) study, led by Laurna Bullock and colleagues at Keele. {Other INDEX resources are already ERO adopted}

Conducting Effective Reviews of people receiving osteoporosis medicines in Primary Care, informed by the PHORM (Pharmacist-led osteoporosis reviews of medication) study, led by Prof Sturrock in Northumbria.
