Bone density scan (DXA) patient information

Introduction:

3 resources:

  1. This patient information leaflet is designed to be used by Bone Density Scan (DXA) services and sent to the patient with their accompanying DXA scan appointment letter. The leaflet includes important patient information, such as:
  • What the scan involves and what to expect
  • How to prepare for the scan
  • When results will be available
  • How to contact the bone density scan department and get information/support

2. The Royal Osteoporosis Society patient factsheet about bone density scans

3. Animation explaining what a bone density scan involves.

These resources were developed as part of the INDEX study at Keele University. The INDEX study explored patient and healthcare professional understanding about bone density scans. Each resource was developed to address common gaps in patient and health professional understanding about bone density scans.

Many of these documents are included in the Royal Osteoporosis Society’s “Guideline for the provision of a clinical bone densitometry service” ros-bone-densitometry-service-guidelines-august-2025.pdf.
